Friday Video: Bugler's Cry: A History of Taps

Friday, May 25, 2012

After some inexplicable glitch at YouTube last night, we're finally able to post this wonderful Friday Video to continue our observation of Memorial Day. The bugle call known as Taps is 150 years old this year, and from the first notes it's both instantly recognizable and hauntingly evocative – and especially appropriate for this weekend.

I hear this every night of late. My older brother is staying with my mother and me for a short time while rebuilding her deck and handicap ramp. He is a career Army officer that retired recently after 27 years of service as a Colonel. His phone has an app that plays Taps at midnight eastern time. It is rather cool and so him. I love it.
Thanks for your post, it is very interesting to me.

I shall never forget hearing taps while my husband's coffin was lowered into the grave. Though he was an officer when he died, he had been the bugler at the military school he attended.
However, my most unforgettable memory of that funeral( most details are lost in the haze of grief) is feeling my 6 year old daughter's body flinch each time the rifle salute sounded.
